“In selecting a male Borzoi, one must look beyond the flowing coat and aristocratic gaze to the structure and soul beneath.”
At our kennel, the foundation of every great Borzoi male is balance—not only in structure, but in mind and movement.
We seek males with correct angulation, both fore and aft, to ensure fluid, ground-covering gait without wasted motion. The shoulders should be well laid back, paired with a long upper arm for reach; the rear must be powerful and well-muscled, driving from a strong second thigh and a low-set hock. Sound movement isn’t just aesthetic—it’s functional, a hallmark of the breed’s heritage as a coursing hound.
A properly developed chest, reaching to the elbows, provides space for heart and lungs—a crucial trait in any endurance-based breed. We avoid extremes: neither slab-sided nor overly barrel-chested, but deep and oval in cross-section.
The topline should be smooth and flowing, gently rising over a strong loin, giving way to a long, low-set tail carried in a relaxed curve. The head is long and refined, with a slight Roman finish and intelligent, dark eyes. Expression should be alert, thoughtful, and characteristically aloof. We require a scissor bite and prefer full dentition, especially in a potential stud.
Above all, temperament matters. A male Borzoi should be confident without being confrontational, gentle without being timid. He should move with grace, assess his surroundings with calm, and respond with measured poise. The ideal temperament reflects the Borzoi’s dual nature: a sensitive companion and an instinctive hunter.
And yes, while we all admire the signature Borzoi coat, we remind ourselves—and our visitors—that coat is the final layer, not the foundation. Structure, health, and disposition always come first.
