In breeding, the role of the female is foundational—not only as the dam of the next generation, but as the enduring example of correct type, balance, and maternal soundness.
A proper brood bitch carries many of the same structural hallmarks as the male, though often expressed with slightly more refinement. She must be gracefully built, but never slight—with substance that supports fertility, sound movement, and stamina.
We prioritize proportionate angulation, with a well-laid shoulder, long upper arm, and powerful hindquarters. Her movement should be clean, covering ground with little effort. A straight or over-angulated rear, or a short, upright front, compromises both efficiency and longevity.
The rib cage should be deep and well-sprung, allowing room for heart, lungs, and—critically—developing litters. The loin must be strong and slightly arched, as is typical of the breed, with a flexible topline that maintains integrity on the move. The tail should be long, low-set, and carried naturally.
Her head should exhibit the same long, clean lines as the male, with an intelligent, gentle expression and dark, obliquely set eyes. A scissor bite is standard, and we value complete dentition in bitches just as we do in sires.
Temperament in the female is especially important. She must be stable, nurturing, and self-possessed—a temperament that makes her an asset both in the field and in the whelping box. We look for bitches who are confident, alert, and adaptable, but not reactive or dominant.
While femininity in appearance is ideal, it must not come at the cost of working structure or maternal capacity. A true brood bitch walks the fine line between beauty and utility—and does so effortlessly.
And, as always, coat is secondary. Lush feathering and fine texture are welcome, but not if they obscure a lack of structure, balance, or soundness.

I believe Diva accomplished something that’s not been done at least in borzoi before. Wonderfully shown by Mary Morgan she completed her AKC Breed Championship from the puppy classes including Breed wins over Specials and then went on to finish her Grand Championship from the puppy classes as well. She won in many different states under all different judges and was simply incredible. What a wonderful show ride it has been with her. Needless to say we certainly have plans to breed her in the future.
